If you go to any Hungarian restaurant, you will find that most of the savoury dishes have a beautiful, vibrant red colour. Now that’s because of the paprika! We Hungarians love to cook with paprika. We use it raw, dried, ground, spicy or sweet, you name it. Its use is versatile and creative, and exactly this is what makes it so essential to our cuisine. Paprika adds colour to our dishes, gives them a rich flavour, and makes them uniquely Hungarian.
Translation is a bit like cooking: you have to know the rules to be a good cook, respect traditions, need to be able to follow the recipe but you cannot be afraid of getting creative and adding your own touch to the dishes you are preparing. And just like paprika brings out the true flavour of our traditional Hungarian dishes, I always aim to add a bit of zing to my translations.
